Methods of Trainingby John Galbraith
The Sad Reality
Walk into any gym and you will see many people doing many different exercises many different ways.
What exercises should I be doing? What is the proper way to do them? How long should I be here and how often? These and other questions go through the minds of even the most experienced gym patrons. Realistically though, how could one possibly know the answers to these questions if they haven't been taught?
A common method of coming up with a program is gathering knowledge from books and websites and trying to apply it in the gym. Although many of the sources may be valid, the sheer volume of information may be overwhelming and often the only thing they have in common is that they all contradict each other. A new member trying to figure the whole thing out may see someone who looks fit and seems to know what they are doing and, usually as inconspicuously as possible, try to copy their routine. Others may set out to get in shape with no plan at all and simply "wing it", ending up stuck in a frustrating and dangerous cycle of trial and error.
Without an intelligent plan we end up wasting a lot of valuable time and risking serious injury.
It's not surprising that after weeks or months with little or no results, aching joints and still feeling unsure and out of place in the gym, many decide that "this isn't for me" and never again use that gym membership that they were so gung-ho about in the beginning.
