Risk / Benefit

Exercise is meant to be beneficial. When done properly the results are amazing (see benefits of exercise article) It is important to be aware, though, that both aerobic and weight-bearing exercise, when done improperly can cause all kinds of physical problems from minor pains and strains to torn muscles, broken bones, weak immune systems and even heart attacks. Yes, ironically enough, exercise can literally kill you!

Therefore my number one priority is always for the safety of my clients.

Obviously, when it comes to performing specific exercises, proper form is crucial. We can all agree on this, but you may be surprised at how much variance exists as to what proper form actually is. I've seen thousands of gym members do their own "versions" of a bench press, for example. Some with solid form and some that frankly, made me cringe. What may seem safe at the time may not really be so because a slight adjustment can mean the difference between suffering joint pain that can develop over time and become chronic, and avoiding it altogether. Two trainers teaching this same exercise may also have quite different ideas as to what the "right way" is.

There are many exercises that work. Generally, some are much better than others. From a cardiovascular and muscle building standpoint a squat can be said to be a "better" exercise than, say, a leg press. It is true that the squat is an incredibly effective exercise for many reasons and as all my clients know, one of my personal favorites. It is also a fact that to perform a safe and productive squat, coordination, flexibility, balance and strength are essential. It requires practice and it requires teaching. So, it can be argued that because of its relative simplicity, in some situations the leg press would be the right choice.

It is not only exercise choice that is important but also their combinations, order and frequency. Each client has specific goals, needs and limitations which dictate proper program design.

My philosophy is simple. I will minimize the risk and maximize the benefit.
